When someone close to us dies, it is normal to experience a period of grief or mourning. We feel sad and have trouble doing everyday things for a while, and often rely on the support of our friends and family to help us through this time.
Sometimes, it can be particularly difficult to come to terms with the loss of that person and the normal mourning process does not happen or is delayed or avoided. This kind of complicated grief reaction can lead to depression. It can be especially hard if we don’t have the social support of friends and family to help us during our grief. We may struggle to function at work or at home and sometimes our relationships with other people can also be affected.
We can also experience loss when we find it difficult to cope with a significant life change. This change might be a sudden change, such as a relationship with a partner ending, or it might be more gradual, for example, a change in our work role, retirement, becoming a parent or moving home. These losses and changes can sometimes feel overwhelming, upsetting, and disrupting. They can be difficult to cope with, and can sometimes lead to depression and worry.
