Anxiety affects many people in different ways.

Statistics available from the Mental Health Foundation suggest that 1 in 4 British adults experience at least one diagnosable mental health problem in any one year, and 1 in 6 experiences this at any given time.  In 2013, there were 8.2 million cases of anxiety in the UK (see www.mentalhealth.org.uk).

The most common problem is mixed anxiety and depression.

Anxiety can affect how we feel.  Some physical symptoms can include:

  • Panic attacks 
  • Palpitations
  • Digestion problems (e.g. sore stomach, nausea)
  • Cold sweats or excessive sweating
  • Trouble breathing (e.g. hyperventilating)
  • Tension in muscles or eyestrain and headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth and being thirsty
  • Needing the toilet more than usual
  • Sleep problems

But we also know that anxiety affects how we think.  Some symptoms include:

  • Always worrying about things
  • Lots of "what if?" thoughts
  • Feeling paranoid and worrying about what others think
  • Feeling on edge, irritable, or easily distracted

And finally, anxiety also has a big impact on our actions.  Common symptoms include:

  • Avoiding things, people, or places
  • Turning down opportunities
  • Withdrawing and only staying indoors or in safe places
  • Saying things to get out of situations
  • Being unusually aggressive or short-tempered

Obviously, some of these symptoms will be unrelated to anxiety, and it's possible to have others too.  But the important thing to know is that if you are suffering anxiety, you are not alone.  Many people have it and it can be quite normal in many situations (for example, if you are stuck in traffic and running late for the airport, it would be strange not to feel a bit anxious!).

There are also some very good treatments available, including psychological treatments such as CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy).
