Owing to the current Covid 19 (coronavirus) situation, most of our team are offering blended working, with both online and in-person sessions, using platforms such as Zoom or Skype.
If you are unsure if our services are right for you, you are welcome to drop us an email with any questions you might have. One of our practitioners will then get in touch in response to your query. To find about the costs, click here.
To speak to someone on the phone, you can leave a message with our reception team, or email us and ask for a call back (our practitioners work with clients most of the day and so will call you back). Email is usually the best way of contacting us as we can respond to most queries after clinic hours.

Below are some frequently asked questions about appointments:
Q. How long does an appointment last?
Appointments are usually 50 minutes long. This allows us to get to know you and your situation in more depth (usually a GP will only have 8-10 minutes, by comparison).
Q. What times of day are appointments available and where are you based?
Each of our practitioners has their own clinic hours. We are based in the centre of Edinburgh, with excellent public transport links (including trams!) just between St Andrews Square and Princes Street, near Waverley Station. The more flexibility you can offer, the sooner we can arrange an appointment. Therapy and counselling appointments are available Monday to Friday with a limited number of evening and weekend sessions, subject to availability. Career counselling and professional coaching are also available (see www.edinburghcoachingservices.co.uk). As we are in the city centre, we don't recommend driving if possible. You can see a map of our location here.
Q. What happens during a first appointment?
The first meeting is all about getting to know you, your situation and the things you are wanting help with. Your practitioner will listen to your concerns or hopes, and together you will discuss ways of meeting your goals. At the end of the session, you will agree on an action plan. This could involve no further contact with us, or we can arrange to match you with the most appropriate practitioner to begin a series of sessions where we work together on your goals.
Q. Is everything confidential? Do you talk to my GP if I have health concerns?
As a private practice, we do exactly that - keep everything private. The only exception would be if we had a legal obligation to do so (for example, if you were about to rob a bank!). We want clients to feel that they can talk to us about anything that is important to them. Sometimes a relative will make an appointment on behalf of a client. When that happens, we explain that the client conversation is confidential and we cannot give updates to the relative on their behalf. When we feel your GP should be informed of anything, we usually advise you, the client, to make that contact.
Q. Can I have a free first appointment?
Our highly discounted rates are based on the time a professional psychologist/therapist/coach gives, and this includes room hire and admin costs. We also charge for each session for ethical reasons - if the first appointment is free, a practitioner might be tempted to convince a client that more work was required, whereas one appointment might be all that is needed. For these reasons, we do not offer a free session. However, if you would like to know more about our services first, you are very welcome to email us on
Q. Why are your rates lower than many of your competitors?
We understand that these are difficult financial times for many people. We believe passionately that helping people early on can avoid long term problems in the future, and this includes advice about careers. Our aim is to provide the highest quality service at the most reasonable price possible. Our self-funding clients pay approximately 40% less per session than the market rate. This is a sign of our commitment to well-being. We hope that clients will also feel this allows them to get more sessions and build up a good relationship with us and our team. Click here to find specific rates.
Q. Can I pay through my Health Insurance?
Every health insurance company has different rules and procedures. Some of our senior psychologists are registered with providers and we can advise you on the best way to proceed to get referred to us. Some will require a GP referral in the first instance. It is usually advisable to email us once your GP has recommended further treatment with a psychologist and we can talk you through the process, depending on which provider you have. It is also possible to start with your health insurance and then continue on a self-funding basis. To find about the costs, click here.
Q. Do you work with children or learning disabilities?
Work with children and/or learning disabilities are specialist areas. Unfortunately, we do not work with learning disabilities (although we can point you in the direction of specialists). We currently work with people aged 16 or over. Contact us for more information.
Q. How do I pay for sessions? Can I pay electronically?
While we accept cash or cheque, payable during the session, to minimise contact most of our team now offer payment by BACS. You should discuss this with your practitioner. You can see our rates by clicking here.
Q. What if this is an emergency? Do you offer emergency support?
We are not an emergency service. We have a page with links and contact details for emergency situations. Click here for more information.
Q. Your website is a bit confusing - are you a Therapy Centre or a Careers & Coaching provider?
The answer is, both! Our co-founder is a Chartered Occupational Psychologist and Registered Coaching Psychologist. We also have a team of psychologists/therapists. Our approach is holistic, which means that we are happy to talk about well-being, mental health and careers. We believe that all areas of our life are important and so we can support people with many different needs. To find out more about our Therapy services, visit www.edinburghpsychologyservices.co.uk.
